Course Syllabus
I. Mit Kraft
Chris begins with a history of the piece, exploring why it's a fairly basic composition with challenging metabolic demands. He shares insights into the piece he gleamed from Ed Treutel, Juilliard educator who discussed this piece personally with Hindemith. Chris discusses tempo, intervals, the relationship between trumpet and piano, and much more.
II. Mäßig bewegt
This second movement, what Chris dubs the "metronome movement," creates a stark contrast with the first. He discusses why this movement is so full of baroque references, where the humor can be found, and why the last 5/4 bar should be alla breve.
III. Trauermusik
The role of the trumpet here is to call a congregation together during a funeral. Chris discusses how we can tell this story, what dynamics are appropriate, and what tempo is best for the ending chorale "All Men Must Die."
